Montessori Model United Nations
mmun_logoEstablished in 2006, the not-for-profit Montessori Model United Nations is the largest Model UN program for students from 9 to 16 years of age, and is the only Model UN program that follows Montessori learning principles to educate its participants, inspiring them with a strong sense of global citizenship. Schools from as far away as India, Alaska, Haiti, Mexico and the Virgin Islands, as well as almost all areas of the United States and Canada, have attended the MMUN Conferences in New York City.

Rupani Foundation hosted the first Texas-based Montessori Model UN (MMUN) Teachers Training Workshop on November 8 and 9, 2008. Teachers attended state-wide from Houston, Dallas, Austin and Georgetown. The purpose was to expose more Texas Montessori teachers to the MMUN program, with the goal of making Texas the first state to host Montessori Model UN Regional Conferences. Such conferences would open the door for more students to participate in and benefit from this important course. One goal of Rupani Foundation in the coming year is to work with the State Governor's Office to create a pilot program that would be available to all Texas schools. Currently many public schools from other states participate in the MMUN.

Students benefit from MMUN by learning to:
  • Understand the perspectives of others
  • Respect and Appreciate Diversity
  • Express opinions in a constructive, accountable manner
  • Debate and Negotiate
  • Understand how the United Nations works
  • Understanding the politics of Global Issues
  • Take Social Action

Accomplishments:

  • Rupani Foundation will make a concentrated effort to gain support for a Texas Regional Conference in Spring 2010 by actively marketing to Texas schools and host this program.
  • Rupani Foundation aims to mentor participating teachers post-training to help ensure that they will be properly prepared.
  • UN Ambassadors will address the MMUN Teacher Training Workshop and the planned MMUN Texas Regional Conference.
  • Use the Texas Regional Conference as a template to establish additional MMUN Regional Conferences throughout the US and internationally.
